Its size is both the primary advantage and the main compromise. Check the exact product page, certificate, grind, hardness, and weight. “Dragonfly” identifies the platform, not one fixed specification.

What Makes the Dragonfly Different?

The Dragonfly is not merely a longer Herman. Its character comes from the relationship between blade width, handle volume, blade mass, and internal titanium structure.

Four features define the platform:

  • a broad blade;
  • a deeper, hand-filling handle;
  • more substantial moving components;
  • extensive internal milling to control weight.

This combination gives the Dragonfly more physical and mechanical presence than Herman’s slimmer models.

One of the Broadest Herman Folders

Dragonfly was historically promoted as the largest Herman model. That description is no longer sufficiently precise because Morpho, Ovium II, and other later models exceed it in certain dimensions.

A more accurate description is that Dragonfly is one of Herman’s broadest, heaviest, and most hand-filling conventional folding knives.

Other models use similar overall length differently:

  • Slim preserves reach in a narrow, lightweight profile.
  • Big Sting enlarges Sting while retaining its lean proportions.

The Dragonfly blade looks heavy, but broad blade stock does not automatically mean poor cutting geometry.

Cutting behavior depends on:

Some current M390 Dragonfly knives use a large-radius hollow grind.

A hollow grind removes additional material behind the edge while preserving more thickness near the spine. Because the radius is large and the blade is wide, the hollow can be shallow rather than visibly concave.

A flat grind creates a continuous wedge toward the edge. On the Dragonfly, it generally provides:

  • more support behind the edge;
  • a logical match for high-wear steel;
  • less abrupt geometry as the blade moves deeper into a cut.

Broad Blade and Working Edge

The wide profile provides:

Edge Quality and Sharpening Notch

Published reviews from different production periods report different factory-edge experiences.

An early reviewer praised the thin grind but found the apex less sharp than expected and improved it with stones and a strop. A later reviewer praised a clean, hand-finished M398 edge produced with a fixed-angle system and diamond abrasives.

The defensible conclusion is not that Dragonfly edges are consistently dull or consistently perfect. Factory edge quality has varied by exact knife and production period. Inspect the individual edge rather than extending one review to the entire model.

Sharpening Notch vs Finger Choil

Dragonfly uses a small sharpening notch, sometimes called a choil cutout.

This should not be confused with a full finger choil such as those found on some Spyderco models. The Dragonfly notch is intended to separate the cutting edge from the plunge grind and give the sharpening stone clearance near the heel.

Long-Term Plunge-Grind Clearance

One reviewer identified a valuable ownership issue: on some examples, the sharpening notch leaves only limited space between the edge and the plunge grind.

After multiple full sharpenings, the stone may begin contacting the plunge before it reaches the entire heel. This can create:

Even reviewers who normally preferred the thinner Slim or Ishtar described the Dragonfly as unusually comfortable.

The 6.46-ounce figure comes from a heavy M398 build on 0.201 in (5.1 mm) blade stock. It should not be treated as the normal weight of current plain-titanium stock.

When the detent releases, the blade accelerates with a deeper and more forceful sensation than the Sting, Bee, or many Slim configurations.

Current product listings may describe the detent as medium, while reviewers often describe it as strong or forceful.

These descriptions are not necessarily contradictory. “Medium” is relative to Herman’s own production, while an owner comparing it with lighter mass-produced folders may perceive the same detent as strong.

A properly tuned Dragonfly should:

  • remain securely closed;
  • show no detent lash;
  • deploy reliably without wrist movement;
  • break cleanly;
  • avoid painful finger pressure.

One later M398 review described the action as extremely difficult to fail: pressure builds against the detent ball before releasing decisively.

A Deeper Herman Sound

Dragonfly often sounds lower and more forceful than Slim or Ishtar.

With a large blade, controlled closing is safer and more useful than an excessively loose guillotine action.

Lock, Pivot, and Bearing Generations

Dragonfly uses a nested Grade 5 titanium liner lock, not a frame lock.

Current examples add a tungsten-carbide lock insert, tungsten-carbide stop pin, ceramic detent ball, custom T20 pivot, retained ceramic bearings, and hardened M390 bearing washers.

The carbide insert provides a hard lock interface and reduces direct titanium-on-steel galling. The hardened washers create dedicated bearing raceways rather than allowing ceramic balls to run against the softer titanium scales.

Earlier Dragonfly knives may use loose ceramic balls, different washers, and older pivot tools. Current caged bearings retain and space the balls, making routine service less hazardous.

Before you disassemble

Identify the generation first. An older loose-bearing video does not describe a current caged-bearing Dragonfly, and following it can release ceramic balls that are difficult to recover.

Pocket Carry and EDC Use

Dragonfly carries better than its dimensions suggest, but it never becomes pocket-neutral.

A typical current example is:

  • about 5.04 inches closed;
  • approximately 1.18 inches wide at the blade;
  • 5.4–5.9 ounces;
  • equipped with a visible flipper tab;

Is Dragonfly Too Heavy for EDC?

For minimalist carry, yes.

For an owner who prefers full-size titanium folders, not necessarily.

A 5.43-ounce MagnaCut configuration is materially different from a 6.46-ounce heavy M398 build. The exact configuration determines whether Dragonfly feels like a large daily user or a collector object that can be carried.

Manual Flipper Classification

Dragonfly is a manual bearing flipper.

It is not:

  • an automatic knife;
  • a spring-assisted knife;
  • an OTF knife.

The user must apply pressure to the flipper tab and overcome the detent before the blade rotates.

Office and Formal Carry

A decorative Dragonfly can look appropriate as a high-end dress knife, but its physical size remains unchanged.

For conservative or low-profile carry, Slim, Sting, or Bee is generally easier to manage.

Dragonfly is better suited to buyers who are comfortable with a visible, full-size folder.

Outdoor Use

Choosing Dragonfly Steel and Grind

Steel should not be chosen independently from grind and edge geometry.

A hollow-ground M390 Dragonfly can cut differently from a flat-ground M398 version even when both are equally sharp.

MagnaCut: Best Balanced User Choice

MagnaCut uses a comparatively fine carbide structure and avoids the large chromium-carbide population found in many high-wear stainless steels.

At Herman’s typical 63–64 HRC, it offers:

  • high toughness for a stainless powder steel;
  • excellent corrosion resistance;
  • good edge stability;
  • a lower tendency toward impact-related microchipping than M398;
  • easier maintenance than very high-carbide steels.

This makes MagnaCut the strongest general recommendation for a Dragonfly that will be carried and used regularly.

Its advantage is not superior abrasive wear resistance. M390 and especially M398 can outperform it in controlled edge-retention tasks. The advantage is a better balance when the edge encounters impact, twisting, or unpredictable daily use.

M390 provides:

The current hollow-ground M390 Dragonfly is a particularly useful combination because the grind reduces cutting resistance while the steel provides long edge life.

M398: Maximum Wear Resistance with Less Toughness

M398 increases vanadium substantially over M390—approximately 7.2% vanadium—and develops a very high carbide volume.

That produces:

  • exceptional abrasive wear resistance;
  • long edge retention in cardboard and rope;
  • greater sharpening difficulty;
  • lower toughness;
  • higher microchipping risk if the edge is ground too thin or subjected to lateral torque.

Earlier Dragonfly M398 examples may be listed around 61 HRC. Current Noblie examples are commonly specified at 62–63 HRC with deep cryogenic treatment.

M398 is best for:

  • controlled cardboard cutting;
  • rope;
  • tape;
  • synthetic packaging;
  • users equipped with diamond or CBN abrasives.

It is a poor choice for twisting cuts, impacts, staples, or casual prying.
