A fair comparison requires three controls.
The Herman Sting and Shirogorov NeOn Lite occupy a similar compact-to-medium EDC class. The Herman Slim, Ishtar and full-size Shirogorov F95 or Hati platforms are closer in blade length and overall footprint. Comparing a lightweight HatiOn Zero with a full-size Herman Dragonfly may reveal personal preferences, but it does not isolate brand-level differences.
Shirogorov ranges from serial Ursus models to limited collaborations and Custom Division knives with more complex materials and bearing systems. The table shows why brand-level statements can be misleading. Herman does not automatically mean heavier, and Shirogorov does not automatically mean a frame lock. The compact NeOn Lite is lighter than the Sting, but the full-size F95T and Slim are close in weight. Shirogorov also uses liner-lock designs on models such as the F3 and Stellar.
Current Herman descriptions specify a stabilized cage with 16 ceramic balls. The balls run against separate hardened raceways rather than directly against the Grade 5 titanium handle. Earlier improved configurations used sintered-carbide washers at approximately 1700 HV; newer documented versions use Böhler M390 washers hardened to approximately 60 HRC, wire cut to 0.6 mm and manually lapped.

Herman’s value is more configuration-sensitive: an unusual pattern, steel, inlay or full-dress treatment may attract a specific buyer but does not guarantee a predictable premium.

Herman is the stronger choice when the knife itself should feel individually configured and visually unmistakable. Shirogorov is the stronger choice when the buyer values platform maturity, integrated machining and a broader hierarchy of bearing and model systems.
