Juha Vartiainen is a Swedish knifemaker whose work is rooted in Scandinavian knife-making traditions. He has been making knives since the 1990s and focuses exclusively on fixed-blade designs, using the format as a foundation for individual compositions built around natural materials, proportion, and hand finishing.
Vartiainen frequently works with desert ironwood, African blackwood, snakewood, mammoth tusk and molar, and other fossil materials. His knives often combine contrasting natural textures with carefully shaped handles, decorative fittings, and fitted sheaths, giving each piece a distinct identity while retaining a recognizable Nordic influence.
He has also developed silversmithing and scrimshaw as part of his decorative vocabulary, incorporating these techniques into selected pieces rather than treating them as separate crafts. This combination of natural materials, individual design, and hand-applied detail reflects the artistic side of handmade custom knives. Vartiainen has competed in Swedish and Nordic knife-making events since 2004 and has received multiple awards. Among his notable results are first-place finishes at the Swedish Championships in 2006 and again in 2022, demonstrating a long-running presence within the Scandinavian custom knife community.
After a nine-year break from the craft, Vartiainen returned to knifemaking in 2020. His current work continues to emphasize one-of-a-kind fixed blades, natural handle materials, Scandinavian styling, and the gradual development of decorative techniques such as scrimshaw and silversmithing.
