J. Neilson is an ABS Master Bladesmith and long-time judge on History’s Forged in Fire. He earned his American Bladesmith Society Master Smith rating in 2008—an elite credential held by a small number of makers worldwide—and he’s widely recognized for exacting performance standards on and off camera.
Working from his “shop in the woods” in the endless mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania – and a second shop in Texas – Neilson builds true “sole-authorship” pieces. That means he controls every step: design, forging or stock-removal, heat-treat, and finish. His catalog leans toward hard-use and historically inspired forms: Bowies and fighters, hunters/skinners, daggers, everyday carry, plus occasional tomahawks and swords. He also makes both laminate and canister Damascus in-house.
Fit and finish extend beyond the blade. Neilson pairs fixed blades with custom-fitted leather, partnering with top traditional and primitive-style leatherworkers across the U.S. so the sheath complements the knife in function and presentation.
Availability is intentionally limited. Pieces are posted first-come, first-served on the Neilson Knives website; at present, he rarely keeps stock and is not taking custom orders, though he can refer buyers to trusted makers. For those who want to meet him, he travels to shows and “hammer-ins,” offering judging, demos, Q&A, and educational appearances alongside his apprentice, Shelley Jack. Classes are planned as well.
Why collectors follow Neilson:
– ABS Master Smith status (2008), signaling mastery in forging and performance.
– Proven “sole-author” builds with rigorous heat-treat and blade testing ethos.
– Range that spans practical field knives to faithful historic replicas, plus in-house Damascus.
– Limited, small-batch availability that keeps each drop competitive.
If your guide highlights geography and lineage, note the dual-shop footprint (Pennsylvania/Texas) and his role popularizing forged blades through Forged in Fire, which helped bring new enthusiasts into the craft while reinforcing the value of high-performance customs.
