The Slim M398 Oerlikon is a high-performance EDC folding knife built around advanced materials and tightly controlled tolerances. Its slim profile and moderate weight make it comfortable to carry, while the internal construction reflects Herman Knives’ methodical, in-house manufacturing approach.
The blade is made from Böhler M398 powder stainless steel, heat treated with deep cryogenic processing (liquid nitrogen) to a hardness of 62–63 HRC. Known for exceptional wear resistance and edge retention, M398 is paired here with a flat grind and medium detent for controlled deployment and consistent cutting behavior. The stonewashed finish helps mask wear and reduces reflections during use.
The handle is machined from Grade 5 titanium and finished with a Balinit A coating, providing increased surface hardness, improved scratch resistance, and a distinctive matte appearance. A hammered floating titanium backspacer adds structural rigidity while reducing visual mass, and the Grade 5 titanium clip maintains a clean, understated profile.
Mechanically, the Slim uses Herman’s updated bearing system with ceramic caged ball bearings designed for increased stability. Blade rotation is further refined by hardened M390 powder steel washers, manufactured entirely in-house. These washers are machined on a Swiss-type lathe, vacuum heat treated to 60 HRC, EDM-cut, sliced to 0.6 mm thickness, and hand-lapped up to a 4000-grit finish to achieve a smooth, consistent bearing surface.
Critical wear points are reinforced with a tungsten carbide lock insert and a tungsten carbide stop pin. The newly refined pivot system consists of a phosphor bronze bushing precisely fitted to the blade, a seven-petal clover-shaped screw preventing rotation, and a TORX T20 fastener secured with removable thread locker. Manufactured in-house from vacuum-hardened stainless steel, the pivot provides stable adjustment and long-term durability.
Each Slim M398 knife is delivered as a complete set in Herman’s original presentation box.
