Hey everyone! I received a folding knife for review, so that’s what we’ll be doing today. I rarely review mass-produced knives, but this time I got curious about this new manufacturer. So, here are my first impressions.
First Impressions
When I first laid my eyes on the Shieldon Empoleon Folding Pocket Knife, I immediately appreciated its sleek design and attention to detail. The knife’s black G10 handle gives it a modern, tactical appearance, while the grey titanium-coated D2 blade complements the overall aesthetic perfectly. The knife’s design exudes quality and practicality, something I look for in every pocket knife.

Blade Performance
The D2 steel blade on the Empoleon is impressive. With a Rockwell Hardness (HRC) of 58-60, the blade strikes a great balance between hardness and toughness. D2 is known for its excellent edge retention, and this knife certainly doesn’t disappoint. I’ve used it to cut through various materials, from cardboard to rope, and the blade remained sharp throughout. The 15-20 degree sharpened angle enhances its slicing ability, making it an excellent tool for everyday carry (EDC) tasks.
The blade’s flat grind contributes to its versatility, allowing for precise cuts. It’s robust enough for tougher tasks, yet the 3mm thickness ensures it’s not too bulky for finer work. Additionally, the drop-point style provides a strong tip, perfect for piercing tasks.

Handling and Ergonomics
Handling the Empoleon feels comfortable and secure. The G10 handle scales are well-textured, providing a firm grip even when my hands were wet. At 12.5mm thick, the handle strikes a good balance between slimness and ergonomics. It’s substantial enough to fill the hand without being cumbersome.
The weight of the knife is another highlight. Weighing in at just 95g (3.35 oz), the Empoleon feels light in the pocket and doesn’t add unnecessary bulk, which is crucial for a knife intended for everyday carry. Despite its lightness, it doesn’t compromise on durability, a testament to the quality of materials used.

Deployment and Lock Mechanism
The flipper mechanism on the Empoleon is smooth, thanks to the ceramic ball bearings. With just a slight push, the blade deploys quickly and efficiently, giving it a satisfying snap when it locks into place. I appreciate how responsive it is—no need for excessive force, just a gentle nudge, and the blade is ready for action.
The liner lock mechanism is solid, with no noticeable blade play when the knife is open. This gives me confidence during use, knowing the blade will stay securely in place. The lock disengages easily when it’s time to close the knife, but not so easily that it would do so accidentally. It’s clear that Shieldon’s in-house R&D team put a lot of thought into the safety and usability of this knife.

Carrying and Pocket Clip
The Empoleon comes equipped with a tip-up pocket clip, which I prefer for these types of knives. The clip is sturdy and holds the knife securely in my pocket, but it’s also easy to draw when needed. The right-hand orientation suits my needs perfectly, although it may be a drawback for left-handed users since it doesn’t offer ambidextrous options.
Given the knife’s overall length of 204mm when open, it fits comfortably in my pocket without feeling obtrusive. The slim profile and lightweight design further enhance its carry comfort.

Final Thoughts
After spending some time with the Shieldon Empoleon, I can confidently say it’s an excellent addition to any knife enthusiast’s collection. Priced at around $20, it offers fantastic value for the quality and performance it delivers. The D2 steel blade, G10 handle, and thoughtful design features make it a reliable tool for everyday carry.
Whether you’re looking for a knife that can handle daily tasks or something that stands out in your collection, the Empoleon checks all the right boxes. It’s a knife that’s both functional and stylish, and one that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using.
