Damasteel® is a Swedish producer of powder-metallurgy stainless Damascus patterned steel based in Söderfors, a historic steelmaking community north of Stockholm. The company was founded in 1995 and has operated as an independent family-owned business since 2012. Its manufacturing process combines Sweden’s long steelmaking tradition with gas-atomized powder metallurgy to produce highly clean, consistent patterned steels for knives, jewelry, watches, and other precision applications.
For knifemaking, one of Damasteel’s best-known products is DS93X™, a martensitic stainless Damascus steel made from RWL34™ and PMC27™. The two powder-metallurgy alloys are combined to provide corrosion resistance, strength, edge retention, and a clearly defined pattern after finishing and etching. These properties have made Damasteel a widely recognized material for high-end custom knives, where both cutting performance and visual character are important.
The current Damasteel portfolio extends beyond conventional patterned knife steel. It includes non-patterned RWL34™, austenitic DS95X™, and Damacore® grades such as DC18N and DC21R, which use patterned outer layers around a distinct core. Damasteel also offers numerous named patterns, including Odin’s Eye™, Hugin™, Thor™, Rose™, Vinland™, Yggdrasil™, and several twist and layered configurations.
Damasteel reports more than 30 years of experience, over 30 available patterns, a network of 25 distributors, and more than 450 customers annually. The company also states that all of its products are made from 100% recycled materials and that it continues to reduce the CO2 impact of production while increasing the use of green-energy alternatives.
Beyond steel production, Damasteel supports the international knifemaking community through technical datasheets, heat-treatment information, maker resources, and the Damasteel Chef Invitational Online. The event brings together culinary knifemakers using Damasteel materials and provides a showcase for one-of-a-kind kitchen knives, technical demonstrations, and direct interaction between makers and collectors.
