Bartosz Herman is a Polish knifemaker and the designer behind Herman Knives. Working from the Herman workshop in Łódź, Poland, he develops original folding-knife designs and oversees the manufacturing process from machining and fitting through final assembly and hand finishing. Herman knives are built as individual pieces rather than identical production runs, with each knife supplied with its own certificate of authenticity.
Design and Construction
Herman’s work combines practical folding-knife geometry with precise machining and distinctive surface treatments. His designs range from compact EDC models such as the Micro Sting and Bee to larger folders including the Ishtar, Mantis, Dragonfly, Slim, Sting and Big Sting. Handles are commonly machined from Grade 5 titanium, while higher-end configurations may use Timascus, Black Timascus, Damascus steel, engraving and other decorative materials.
Blade Steels and Materials
Herman uses modern powder-metallurgy steels as well as laminated and Damascus steels. Depending on the model and individual knife, blade materials include Böhler M390, Böhler M398, CPM MagnaCut and Damasteel. The wide range of blade steels and titanium finishes allows the same Herman model to appear in substantially different working, collector and full-dress configurations.
Action and Mechanical Details
The opening action is one of the most recognizable features of Herman folders. The mechanism uses ceramic ball bearings and a ceramic detent ball, while Bartosz Herman’s proprietary pivot is supplied with a dedicated adjustment tool. A tungsten-carbide stop pin is used at a high-wear contact point. Herman also pays close attention to blade centering, detent tuning and final fitting during assembly.

Herman Knives has developed a broad family of folding knives with different sizes, blade profiles and handle geometries, while retaining a consistent emphasis on titanium construction, mechanical action and individual finishing. Alongside functional EDC configurations, the workshop produces elaborate collector pieces, including hand-engraved and full-dress knives created with specialist engraving artists.
