Maverick Customs Knife & Tool is the Kentucky-based workshop of American knifemaker and machinist James Robert Buckley. Operating from Horse Cave, Buckley brings a professional background in machining and welding to custom knife and EDC design, combining hands-on metalworking with modern manufacturing methods.
Buckley’s knife work includes custom folders, fixed blades, and other EDC tools built around practical geometry, durable construction, and individually selected materials. His folders have used premium blade steels, titanium frames, custom hardware, and materials such as MokuTi and Damascus, with close attention to lock fitting, action, machining, and final finishing.
The workshop’s approach reflects the mechanically focused side of high-end custom knives, where precision machining and individual handwork are combined within a single build. Recent examples include the Viper frame-lock folder, produced with a CPM S45VN harpoon-point blade, heat-colored titanium frame, and MokuTi opening stud. Buckley has also worked with other makers and manufacturers. He collaborated with Kyle Vallotton on VMX Knives and the VMX-1 balisong, while his Harpoon fixed-blade design was later produced by Kizer. These projects extended Maverick Customs design work beyond one-off knives into collaborative and production formats.
Maverick Customs continues to develop knives and EDC products in Kentucky. In addition to custom knife work, Buckley has applied his machining and design experience to products such as the Flipper Universal (FU) Pen, maintaining the same emphasis on U.S.-based design, manufacturing, and mechanical experimentation.
