Designed by Polish knifemaker Bartosz Herman, the Ovium II also has one of the more individual silhouettes in the Herman lineup. Its blade is broader and longer than the Slim, more edge-focused than the Mantis, and considerably larger than the compact Bee or Vespertilio.
This Herman Ovium II review examines whether those proportions work beyond the specification sheet. The central question is not whether the knife looks compact beside its blade. It is whether the design converts that blade-to-handle efficiency into useful cutting reach without creating an awkward grip, excessive weight, or an impractical carry experience.

The Ovium II succeeds because it does not chase an impressive blade-to-handle ratio by shortening the grip beyond practical use. Its strengths are specific rather than universal: excellent spatial efficiency, serious cutting reach, a neutral full-size grip, and Herman’s current bearing and pivot architecture. In exchange, the owner accepts a large public profile, approximately five ounces of pocket weight, possible detent variation, and finishes that may prioritize collection over everyday convenience.

Where that specimen differs from current listed specifications or appears to have unusual tuning, the difference is identified rather than averaged into the model-level data.
That distinction is important with Herman Knives. The model name defines the platform, but the certificate and product page define the individual knife. Steel, hardness, blade finish, handle pattern, weight, detent strength, and internal generation can vary between releases.

The independently reviewed M390 example fell outside the current listed range in two respects. It was measured at approximately 9.35 inches overall with a reported 4.25-inch blade, and it weighed about 4.9 ounces (139 g). The blade-length difference may partly reflect measuring method, but the lower weight cannot be explained that way. It more likely reflects the specific milling, hardware, blade material, or production configuration of that knife.
For consistent model comparisons, this review uses the current listed dimensions of 4.06 inches for the blade and 9.29 inches overall.
The Ovium II should not be treated as a minor cosmetic update. The second generation uses a different blade silhouette, a redesigned handle, and a larger overall platform.
The first-generation Full Dress Ovium documented in an earlier independent review measured 8.94 inches overall, with a 3.90-inch blade, a 5.04-inch handle, 0.126-inch blade stock, and a weight of 4.3 ounces. The current model extends the listed blade to 4.06 inches and the closed handle to 5.31 inches.

The dimensional increase is modest compared with the visual change. The original Ovium had a slimmer and more organic blade. The Ovium II uses a taller and broader working profile with a more angular spine, a longer low-bellied edge, and a more accessible point.
The handle became more structurally defined around the pivot and index-finger area while retaining the clean presentation surfaces associated with Bartosz Herman’s work. This is therefore an evolution in purpose as much as scale. The first Ovium was an elegant large folder built around a safety-oriented sheepfoot concept. The Ovium II places greater emphasis on usable edge, tip access, and blade-to-handle efficiency.
Herman’s own model description connects the name Ovium to the Latin ovis, meaning “sheep,” and to the sheepfoot-inspired blade of the original knife. The name was not chosen as an abstract designation. It described the blade concept.
The original Ovium followed the traditional sheepfoot idea more closely. Its nearly straight working edge supported controlled slicing, while the lowered and rounded nose reduced the likelihood of accidental piercing. This type of geometry is useful when the cutting edge matters more than a sharp point.
Ovium II retains that lineage, but the design no longer fits the conventional sheepfoot category. The long edge still sits low and remains close to straight through much of its length, preserving the controlled draw-cut behavior that inspired the original name. The spine, however, now terminates in a raised and distinctly sharper point.
That change makes the second generation more versatile. The tip can initiate cuts, open taped seams, pierce packaging, and perform controlled detail work more effectively than the rounded nose of a traditional sheepfoot.
The name therefore records the origin of the model even though the geometry has evolved beyond it. Ovium II began with a sheepfoot concept, retained its low and controlled working edge, and added a more functional point. This is also why the blade is difficult to classify under one canonical shape: its cutting behavior comes from the original sheepfoot idea, while its tip belongs to a broader modern utility design.
The defining number is the relationship between the 4.06-inch blade and the 5.31-inch closed handle. The blade measures approximately 76 percent of the handle length, leaving relatively little unused space beyond the tip and pivot.
That ratio alone does not establish good design. A maker could improve it by shortening the handle until the grip became uncomfortable, moving the folded tip dangerously close to the rear of the frame, or reducing the pivot area below what a large blade requires.
The Ovium II avoids those shortcuts. Its handle remains long enough for a complete grip and broad enough around the pivot to control the blade. The frame is efficient rather than artificially shortened.
There is no oversized forward finger choil consuming a large section of the blade. There is also no extended rear handle with little ergonomic purpose or a long decorative ricasso separating the hand from the working edge. Most of the physical length performs a clear function.
The long cutting edge is more important than the headline blade measurement. Some large folders achieve an impressive overall blade length while sacrificing working edge to an extended unsharpened section. On the Ovium II, the edge begins close to the handle and continues through most of the blade.
That gives the knife a real advantage when uninterrupted edge engagement matters. Large cardboard, broad packaging, food preparation away from the kitchen, cord, sheet material, and long draw cuts can be completed with less repositioning than they would require from a shorter EDC blade.
The benefit becomes less meaningful in confined work. Opening an envelope, cutting tape, sharpening a pencil, or trimming a label rarely requires four inches of edge. For those tasks, the Ovium II asks the user to carry and control more knife than necessary.
This is why the model should not be described as a universally better EDC. It is a specialized large folder whose proportions become valuable when the owner deliberately wants additional reach.
The central claim therefore holds only with the correct qualification. The Ovium II places maximum practical blade in an efficient handle. It does not turn a four-inch folder into a small knife.
The Ovium II blade is best understood as an evolved sheepfoot-inspired utility profile rather than a strict example of one traditional pattern.
The long central section supports draw cuts and continuous slicing. Its limited curvature keeps a large portion of the edge engaged with broad material, while the shallow belly adds enough tolerance for general cutting and sweeping motions.
An independent reviewer informally described the profile as a “Wharncliffe with a belly.” That is useful shorthand, but it does not capture the model’s full lineage. The edge behavior comes from the original sheepfoot concept; the elevated point and shallow curvature turn it into a more versatile modern utility blade.
The point is the most important departure from the first Ovium. Instead of a rounded nose intended primarily to reduce puncture risk, the Ovium II raises and sharpens the tip. It remains accessible for opening taped seams, initiating cuts, and performing controlled detail work, while retaining more supporting material than a narrow trailing-point or needle-like design.
A small angular transition along the spine creates a subtle harpoon-like shoulder. It is not an aggressive jimped thumb ramp, and its practical effect is secondary to the edge geometry. It does, however, provide a tactile indexing point and contributes to the model’s distinct silhouette.
Current blades use approximately 0.130–0.134 inches of stock with a tall flat grind. That is a sensible foundation for a blade of this length: substantial enough to avoid feeling delicate, but not so thick that the knife becomes a sharpened wedge.
A flat grind does not automatically guarantee low cutting resistance. Thickness behind the edge, sharpening angle, blade width, surface finish, and the material being cut all remain important. The tall Ovium II blade gives the primary bevel enough distance to transition gradually from the spine toward the edge.
The independently reviewed M390 specimen arrived with an exceptionally sharp factory edge and was considered effective for draw cuts, continuous cutting, and general slicing. That supports the intended geometry, although the review did not provide a measured thickness behind the edge or a controlled comparison against other knives.
The edge begins close to the handle, but there is no large forward finger choil. Owners should keep the index finger behind the flipper tab rather than attempting to choke up onto the blade.
The heel and plunge area should also be considered during long-term sharpening. A minimal sharpening choil preserves more usable edge, but it can make it easier to develop a small recurve or sharpening “smile” near the plunge if the abrasive cannot reach the heel cleanly.
Overall, the geometry is more than a visual exercise. The Ovium II combines substantial blade presence with the edge shape needed to function as a long precision cutter rather than a thick hard-use wedge.
The Ovium II has appeared in M390, M398, CPM MagnaCut, Damasteel, and other limited blade materials. These steels do not change the underlying profile, but they affect sharpening behavior, edge durability, toughness, surface finish, and the balance between user and collector value.
MagnaCut is the broadest user-oriented choice. It combines high corrosion resistance with better toughness and edge stability than highly wear-focused stainless steels.
Current Herman MagnaCut configurations commonly use a listed hardness of 63–64 HRC with deep cryogenic treatment. At that range, MagnaCut can support a refined working edge while retaining the toughness advantage that distinguishes it from more carbide-heavy steels.
On an Ovium II, that balance makes sense for mixed daily use. The long edge and extended point are less dependent on cautious handling than they would be in a lower-toughness steel. MagnaCut is therefore the logical option for an owner who intends to carry and cut regularly rather than primarily collect.
It does not provide the maximum abrasive edge retention available in the Ovium range. Its advantage is that it gives up less elsewhere.

M390 remains the familiar premium stainless option. It provides strong abrasive wear resistance, excellent corrosion resistance, and high polishability, which aligns well with Herman’s bright stonewash and mirror-oriented blade finishes.
The independently reviewed M390 Ovium II was certified at 61 HRC. That specimen combined a highly polished stonewash finish with an extremely sharp factory edge and forceful mechanical action. The observation applies to that particular knife rather than every M390 Ovium II.
At 61 HRC, M390 offers a conventional premium-folder balance: sustained slicing performance and corrosion resistance without pushing the alloy toward its highest potential hardness.
M390 is less tolerant than MagnaCut when the edge is twisted, impacted, or used outside normal cutting tasks. That difference matters less when the knife is used according to its geometry.

M398 is the wear-resistance specialist. Current Ovium II M398 examples are listed at 62–63 HRC after deep cryogenic treatment and use approximately 0.130-inch blade stock.
The alloy contains a high volume of hard carbides and is intended for prolonged abrasive cutting. In practical terms, that makes it suitable for cardboard, fibrous material, and other tasks where a working edge is gradually worn rather than suddenly damaged.
The tradeoff is lower toughness than MagnaCut and slower sharpening. M398 should not be twisted through dense material, struck against hard inclusions, or treated as a prying tool.
Diamond or CBN abrasives are the sensible maintenance choice. Conventional softer stones may cut the steel slowly and can make edge repair unnecessarily time-consuming.
M398 is not automatically better because it holds an abrasive edge longer. It is more specialized. Buyers gain wear resistance while accepting a narrower margin for lateral stress and more demanding sharpening.
Damasteel changes the ownership proposition more than the underlying cutting role. The broad Ovium II blade provides enough surface area for the pattern to remain clearly visible, especially when paired with mirror polishing and a coordinated Puzzle handle.
The documented Damasteel Puzzle version uses the Svavner pattern at 61 HRC, with approximately 0.134-inch blade stock and a finished weight of 5.05 ounces.
It remains a functional blade, but the visual treatment naturally moves the knife toward collector ownership and more careful use. A buyer may be less willing to mark a mirror-polished patterned blade than a stonewashed M398 or MagnaCut version.
“Damascus” should not be treated as one universal steel category. Damasteel, Damax, DamaCore, Balbach Damascus, stainless laminates, and conventionally pattern-welded steels differ in composition and construction.

The Ovium II handle is efficient, but it is not abbreviated. Its 5.31-inch closed length provides enough usable space for a full grip and enough leverage behind the pivot to manage the long blade.
The index finger settles behind the flipper tab, which acts as a modest guard when the blade is open. The central handle remains relatively neutral, allowing the middle and lower fingers to find their own positions rather than forcing the hand into sharply separated finger grooves.
That neutrality is useful across different hand sizes. Medium and large hands receive a complete grip, while broader palms still have enough rear handle to stabilize the knife during a long cut.
The design does not invite aggressive choking up. There is no dedicated forward finger choil, and the cutting edge begins relatively close to the handle. This maximizes usable edge but requires the index finger to remain behind the flipper.
The independent reviewer found the knife exceptionally comfortable despite its size. He also noted the upward angle of the flipper tab, which reduces the tendency for the index finger to strike a downward-pointing projection during deployment.
The broad pivot area contributes to control. Rather than placing a long blade on a narrow gentleman’s-knife frame, Herman gives the front of the handle enough height to resist rotation during extended slicing.
Handle finish can change that experience. Smooth or lightly textured titanium allows the hand to reposition naturally. Deep engraving and high-relief milling add tactile definition but may create more concentrated contact during prolonged cutting.
Greater texture does not automatically mean better ergonomics. A deeply machined surface can improve traction in a dry grip while making the knife less comfortable to shift in the hand and slower to move through a pocket.
The clip also becomes part of the grip. Herman’s machined titanium clip follows the handle line and avoids the visual bulk of generic stamped hardware, but it remains a raised contact surface beneath the fingers. The independent review did not identify it as a significant hot spot on that specimen.
At approximately five ounces, the Ovium II carries enough mass to feel substantial without becoming unusually heavy for its blade length. Internal titanium milling helps control the weight and prevents the handle from feeling disproportionately dense.
The long blade inevitably produces more rotational momentum than a Bee, Sting, or Vespertilio. The handle succeeds because it provides enough palm contact and rear leverage to manage that mass without becoming equally oversized.
The Ovium II uses a Grade 5 titanium liner lock, not a framelock. The locking spring sits inside the handle rather than forming part of the exposed exterior scale.
It can reasonably be described as an internally nested titanium liner lock, but it should not be renamed an inset framelock. The lock remains a dedicated liner inside the handle.
This architecture has a clear visual advantage. Both exterior sides can carry continuous milling, anodizing, engraving, inlays, or Puzzle treatment without the large relief cut associated with a framelock.
It also reduces the effect of grip pressure on lock release. On a framelock, the user can press directly against the lock bar while holding the knife. The internal Ovium II liner remains more isolated from the outer grip.
Current knives use a tungsten carbide insert at the lock interface and a tungsten carbide stop pin. These hard contact surfaces reduce wear where the titanium liner meets the blade tang and where the blade reaches its open position.
The independently reviewed M390 specimen showed clean lock engagement, exact centering, and no reported vertical play, lateral play, pivot lash, lock stick, or secondary movement at lockup. Those observations apply to that knife, but they demonstrate the assembly standard achieved on a correctly tuned Ovium II.
Access to the liner was also considered generous enough for deliberate closing without leaving the lock excessively exposed. Once released, the blade moved freely, and the flipper tab provided an intermediate stop before the edge entered the handle.
The liner-lock construction suits the intended role of the knife. The Ovium II is designed for controlled cutting rather than impact, chopping, or lateral prying. Within that role, a properly fitted titanium liner lock is entirely appropriate.
Current Ovium II knives use Herman’s improved caged ceramic bearing system. Each cage retains 16 ceramic balls, preventing loose balls from falling away during disassembly and maintaining their spacing around the pivot.
The bearings run against hardened M390 powder-steel washers rather than directly against the titanium handle. These washers provide a defined hard raceway and reduce the risk of ceramic balls cutting permanent tracks into softer titanium.
Current Herman documentation describes the M390 washers as produced in-house, vacuum heat-treated to approximately 60 HRC, cut by wire EDM, and manually lapped to a fine finish.

The practical result is not simply a blade that falls shut. The system reduces startup friction, keeps movement consistent through the pivot arc, protects the titanium frame, and provides a controlled replaceable running surface.
Earlier Herman knives may use different bearing cages, washers, or pivot generations. The internal construction should therefore be verified from the listing or certificate rather than inferred from the model name alone.
Current Ovium II configurations use a proprietary TORX T20 pivot made from polished 440C stainless steel and hardened to approximately 56–58 HRC. The set includes a dedicated titanium tool for adjustment.
The proprietary pivot gives Herman control over fit, thread geometry, contact area, and presentation. It also makes correct tool use important, especially on polished, anodized, or intricately finished knives.
Do not overtighten the pivot
A bearing pivot should not be tightened according to the instinct used on a fixed mechanical joint. Excessive torque can compress the assembly, slow the blade, disturb centering, or crush ceramic components. If the knife arrives centered, stable, and properly tuned, leaving the pivot unchanged is normally the safer decision.
The opening action is shaped by three factors: the mass of the long blade, the strength of the ceramic detent, and the low-friction bearing system.
Pressure builds against the detent. Once that resistance is overcome, the blade’s rotational mass carries it through the pivot and into lockup with a forceful mechanical response.
The independently reviewed M390 example represented the heavy end of that behavior. Its detent was described as substantially stronger than on any other Herman knife the reviewer had handled. Deployment required deliberate finger placement and considerable pressure, but the blade accelerated into lockup once the detent released.
That observation should not become a model-wide claim. The same reviewer stated that detent strength varies between individual Herman knives, and current listings may identify the exact knife as having a light, medium, or strong detent.
A strong detent has a functional purpose on a large blade. It must retain the blade securely while closed and provide enough stored force for reliable flipper deployment. The tuning becomes excessive only when the required finger pressure outweighs the benefit.
After the lock was released, the reviewed blade moved smoothly and approached fall-shut behavior. A blade of this size can close with meaningful momentum, so maximum drop speed is not necessarily the safest or best adjustment.
Stable lockup, reliable centering, controlled closing, and repeatable deployment matter more than making the blade fall as freely as possible.
The characteristic Herman sound comes from the complete assembly: blade mass, liner tension, pivot stiffness, stop contact, backspacer construction, and the rigidity of the titanium handle. It contributes to the ownership experience, but it should not be mistaken for proof of lock strength or cutting performance.
The Ovium II is easier to carry than its open dimensions suggest, but it does not disappear in the pocket.
A 5.31-inch titanium handle, approximately five-ounce weight, broad pivot area, and projecting flipper create a meaningful footprint. The knife is manageable in jeans, work trousers, or a dedicated knife pocket, particularly for users already accustomed to full-size folders.
In lightweight trousers or narrow front pockets, its dimensions become more obvious. The knife also occupies enough space that carrying it beside keys, coins, or other metal objects risks marking elaborate finishes.
Handle texture can matter as much as weight. The independently reviewed knife used deep milling with dark recessed sections and lightly textured upper surfaces. The reviewer found the finish visually effective and comfortable in the hand, but it created noticeable resistance against pocket fabric.
That is a configuration-specific issue, not an unavoidable Ovium II trait. Smooth stonewashed titanium, shallow linear milling, or a restrained hammered finish will enter and leave the pocket more easily than a deeply engraved or high-relief pattern.
The same texture that improves visual depth and dry-hand traction can therefore reduce everyday convenience. Deep recesses create more edges against the fabric and may accelerate wear around the pocket opening.
The flipper tab is another carry consideration. Its upward angle improves deployment comfort, but it remains a protruding element that can contact other objects in the pocket.
The clip follows the handle line and contributes less visual bulk than generic stamped hardware. It is not intended to transform the knife into a minimal deep-carry folder, and buyers should examine the individual photographs to see how much handle remains above the pocket line.
The Ovium II can function as a large-format EDC, but the owner should actively want the extra blade length. It is less convincing as a discreet urban carry knife.

A plain or lightly milled titanium handle with a stonewashed M398, M390, or MagnaCut blade emphasizes geometry, action, and mechanical construction. It is easier to carry without worrying about every fine mark and makes the strongest case as a premium user.
Deep engraving, multicolor Puzzle treatment, Damasteel, mirror polishing, and coordinated clip or backspacer work shift the emphasis toward presentation. The knife remains functional, but a larger share of the purchase price reflects material rarity, machining, finishing, and individual character.
The independently reviewed M390 handle shows how complex effects can be produced from conventional Grade 5 titanium. Its dark recessed areas and lighter upper surfaces could be mistaken in photographs for layered titanium, but the appearance came from milling, texturing, and color treatment rather than Timascus or titanium Damascus.
That distinction matters in product descriptions. A milled and anodized titanium handle should not be called Timascus, Mokuti, or titanium Damascus unless the material itself is a layered titanium composite.
Herman often carries the finish across the clip, backspacer, pivot, liner, and hardware. Successful examples feel coordinated rather than assembled from unrelated decorative components.
The broad blade and long handle make the Ovium II particularly suitable for this approach. Patterns remain legible across the large surfaces, and a Damasteel blade can form a complete visual composition with a multicolor Puzzle frame.
Blade finish also changes the ownership experience. A conventional stonewash is the easiest option for regular carry because it disguises minor scratches and fingerprints. A shiny stonewash adds visual depth while retaining some practical surface variation.
Mirror polish displays Herman’s finishing ability more clearly but also makes fine marks more visible. Etched patterned steels require careful maintenance because aggressive polishing can reduce contrast or alter the original finish.
The strongest value proposition depends on the buyer. A user receives more practical value from a simpler build. A collector may reasonably assign greater value to unusual materials, hand finishing, and a configuration unlikely to be repeated.
